Facilitation, Workshops, and Trainings
I am an Access, Equity Diversity, and Inclusion facilitator. My approach to this work is anti-racist, anti-bigoted, and intersectional. My work examines the ways that racism, bigotry, misogyny, and ableism impact policy, practices, and pedagogy. My work is centered on the individual, whether you work at a theatre, university, or nonprofit organization. Because each of us has an individual and collective responsibility to ourselves and each other.
Translation: who you are as an individual and how you operate in this world is core to understanding the role you play in our collective liberation.
As part of my work, I design and facilitate panel discussions, workshops, and cohort-style learning sessions based on topics related to race, racism, gender, class, power, privilege, identity, and equity. Each session is unique and will be designed to suit the context of your theatre, department, and/or organization. There will be assigned readings, listenings, and viewings; small and large interactive group discussions; and self-reflective writing experiences for in-depth dialogue, continuous learning, and ongoing engagement. Together, we will build a knowledge base, engage in active, constructive dialogue, and discover how each of us can act a social justice change agent.
My training sessions will help you develop a practice for viewing the world through an anti-racist and intersectional lens. You will build a knowledge base and develop the skills to take on leadership roles in your personal and professional life. You will also learn how to identify racism, challenge assumptions, and build ongoing systemic change within your theatre, department, and/or organization. Some topics that these sessions explore include:
Building Trust, Creating Equitable, and Inclusive Spaces
Cultural Appropriation versus Cultural Appreciation
Deconstructing Power Dynamics and Equalizing the Power
Establishing and Evaluating Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Initiatives
Establishing and Evaluating Anti-Racist Initiatives
How to Be an Effective Ally, Advocate, and Accomplice
How to be racially conscious, socially aware, and culturally literate
Identity-based Leadership and Social Responsibility
Strategies for Applying an Intersectional Racial Equity Lens
Tools for Dismantling White Supremacy
Understanding How Racism Works and Affects Social Relations
Understanding Socialization and Implicit Bias
This work is hard. This work is messy. This work is deeply uncomfortable. This work requires humility and vulnerability. This work requires you to examine and assess who you are as an individual and how you operate in the world. This work requires that you hold yourself to account for your actions and inactions. This work is an undoing of thought, re-examination of values, and re-positioning of self in society. My job is guide you through that process with compassion, clarity, and candor.
I have had the opportunity to work with a diverse range of clients: Actors Theatre of Louisville, Boston Playwrights Theatre, City of Raleigh, the Dramatists Guild, Education Theatre Association, eHarmony, the English National Opera, Flat Rock Playhouse, HERE Arts Center, James Madison University's School of Theatre and Dance, Local 802 - American Federation of Musicians, Maestra Music, Montclair State University's Department of Theatre and Dance, New Jersey Institute of Technology/Rutgers University, PACE School of Performing Arts, PACE Actor Studio Drama Program, PCPA Pacific Conservatory Theatre, PlayMakers Theatre Company, Rattlestick Playwrights Theatre, ScriptWorks, Shea’s Performing Arts Center, Shenandoah Conservatory, Theatre Communication Group, the University of Southern California's School of Dramatic Arts, University of Kentucky’s College of Design, University of Memphis’s Department of Theatre and Dance, University of Virginia’s Department of Drama, and Vagabond Theatre.
